Binding

The binding is the finished edge of the quilt. Binding is one long strip of fabric folded in half, so one edge of the binding is raw and the other edge is folded. Using a sewing machine, sew the raw edge of the binding to the front of the quilt; then fold the binding around to the back of the quilt, and either hand or machine stitch the folded edge to the back of the quilt.

Hand stitching the folded edge to the back of the quilt is the traditional method. It is also the most neat and precise method. It does, however, take a while, so consider this when deciding whether to hand or machine stitch. I like to hand stitch the binding while sitting on the couch with a movie on, so I don’t mind its taking a while. If you choose to hand stitch the back of the binding, cut the binding strips 2½˝ wide.

Machine finishing the binding is much quicker but does not look quite as neat (unless you are very talented). This option may be perfect for those of you who are not concerned with perfection and just want to finish the quilt. If you machine stitch the binding, cut the binding strips 3˝ wide, so the sewing machine is sure to catch the edge.

1. Cut binding fabric into 2½˝ strips (3˝ if machine finishing).

2. Connect all the strips into a long strip. To connect 2 strips, place 2 ends at right angles, right sides together, and sew a diagonal seam across the corner. Trim seam to ¼˝ and press open. Repeat until all strips are joined. A
